What is primary care, and what does a primary care physician do?

Primary care is the care for people with health complaints or questions about their health. The GP plays a central role in this, because he/she has a complete overview of the health of the client and his/her family. A GP has broad knowledge of common health problems and can advise, treat and, if necessary, refer to a specialist or other healthcare provider for follow-up care.

Which health problems can be treated in primary care?

A large number of health problems can be treated in primary care, ranging from acute complaints such as flu, colds and skin rashes to chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma and high blood pressure. The GP can also help with minor psychological complaints, wound care and vaccinations and offers guidance with lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking.

How often should I visit my GP for routine check-ups?

The frequency of routine check-ups with your GP depends on your general health and personal or family history. For people over 50, an annual check-up is often recommended to detect and prevent any health problems at an early stage. For younger people without health complaints, the GP may advise to visit less often, unless there are specific risk factors or health questions.

Do I need a referral to visit a GP?

No, you do not need a referral to make an appointment with your GP. You can always contact your GP  yourself for a consultation, advice or to discuss health questions.

Are the costs of primary care covered by my health insurance?

Yes, the costs of primary care are covered from the basic health insurance. Consultations with the GP are covered by the basic coverage, so there are usually no costs associated with a visit, unless specific additional services are required that are not covered by the basic insurance. For more information, please consult the website of Zorg en Jeugd Caribisch Nederland (ZJCN).

Are there other services offered in primary care?

Yes, in addition to regular consultations, primary care often offers additional services. This can include chronic care, psychological care, minor surgical procedures (such as mole removal) and dietary advice. This often allows you to access a wide range of care services close to home without having to go straight to a specialist.
